Monday 5th January 2026 - Parish Church of the Ascension Main Hall 8pm.

Caroline and Ludka's Soup Kitchen will be opening up for another evening of culinary delights. To accompany the fare on offer, there will be a full evening of dancing and this year the programme comes in the form of a musing on how the festive period has changed for us over the years. There are 10 dances hidden in the text below (some better disguised than others) and as a warning, one of them is not in the club's usual repertoire so you might not have heard of it. Have fun!

Festive Musings

How did you celebrate New Year? Jiggers of whisky, pints of beer, flutes of Champagne? Reeling through my memories, we have done many things over the years – three day house parties, golf club dinners and of course, many Hogmanay dances. However nowadays we’re more likely to have a quiet night in doing jigsaws or watching TV – there’s nothing that shouts Happy New Year more than witnessing some particularly brutal murders in Midsomer!

Common to every new year is reflecting on the past and how life has changed. Now that the family children have all grown up, Christmas is a classic example of how things are different. Family get togethers are hard to organise as the next generation have jobs that often mean working funny hours; our son James now drives lorries whilst our niece, Ellie, is a Zoologist and a leading expert on the physiology of the black bear. She owns two little dogs called Norma and Duchess. Tree-decorating is now just another job and no longer a moment of wonder, presents are ever more eclectic – tickets to Glastonbury, torque wrenches and bottles of Johnnie Walker (or other liquid assets!) replacing the toys and games of the past. Some years we miss Ellie, Norma and Duchess altogether as our niece often travels for work - this year for example she spent Christmas Day in Edinburgh and had lunch at a party aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia! How times have changed!

Happy New Year!
