Monday 9th October 2023 - Parish Church of the Ascension Main Hall 8pm - 10:00pm Bring and Share refreshments

At our first dance class of the season we danced The Ecclefechan Feline for the first time and the inevitable question arose "Where is Ecclefechan"? This put me in mind of one of the rounds on "Richard Osman's House of Games", already a rich source of inspiration for themes for both lockdown and subsequent socials. The original version was called "Where is Kazakhstan" and the competitors had to locate a specific place on a map.

Below is a map of Scotland, which has various locations marked with a letter. Each location is also the name of a dance. The programme for tonight is as follows and all you have to do is to match the number of each dance with its location letter.

ANSWERS

1 EH3 7AF C : Postcode of RSCDS HQ in Edinburgh

2 The Duchess Tree D : a lime tree in the grounds of Gordon Castle at Fochabers

3 The Chequered Court T : connects the two main buildings of University Hall, St Andrews where the RSCDS meets for the yearly Summer School.

4 Neidpath Castle R : tower house, overlooking the River Tweed about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Peebles in the Borders of Scotland.

5 Polharrow Burn K : a small watercourse in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It rises in Loch Harrow and flows towards St John's Town of Dalry before joining the Water of Ken.

6 Airie Bennan H : a hill to the west of Dumfries, about 7 miles (11km) south west of St. John's Town of Dalry.

7 Queen's View W : When Queen Victoria visited in 1866, she assumed that the sweeping view west along Loch Tummel was named after her – but she was wrong. We think the view was really named after Isabella, the first wife of Robert the Bruce, who lived more than 500 years earlier.

8 Drumelzier O : is a village and civil parish in the Tweed Valley in the Scottish Borders South-West of Peebles.

9 Jim's Haberdashery M : the name affectionately given to the RSCDS Stirling Branch’s shop, originally ‘Strathspey Sales,’ which Jimmy Taylor instigated. The dance was written on his retirement as Chairman of the Branch in 1990.

10 Falls of Rogie Y : a series of waterfalls on the Black Water in Ross-shire. The falls are about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) northwest of the village of Contin.
