Held at Church of the Ascension, The Avenue, Wembley from 8pm on Monday 6th October 2014. Commemorating Two Giants of Scottish Country Dancing
John Drewry In June we heard of the sad loss of one of the most prolific writers of Scottish country dances. It is very rare to go to an event without a smattering of John's dances on the programme. In addition to the ones we are dancing tonight, our regular repertoire includes "Drewry" dances The Byron Strathspey, Crossing the Line, Cape Breton Island, Cherrybank Gardens, The Dancing Master, The Duchess Tree, Father Connelly's Jig, Foxhill Court, The Glenalmond Gamekeeper, MacLeod's Fancy, Margaret Parker's Strathspey, Moray Rant and The Recumbent Stone. All the dances we will dance tonight have been written by John, with the exception of the last one which was composed by Roy Goldring as a tribute to John Drewry.
Bobby Crowe In September, Scottish Dance musicians across the world mourned the loss of a legendary bandleader. Bobby regularly played at the London Highland Club Balls at Porchester Hall and his distinctive music inspired a generation of dancers. Tonight, we will be dancing to some live recordings made by Bobby at Porchester Hall in 1981 and 1985, as well as some from Hertford in 1992. Being live recordings they are maybe not as slick as commercial recordings but they have a life and energy that makes them so good to dance to. Just researching and preparing these tracks have transported me back to those memorable evenings of my youth and serve as a lasting tribute to a marvelous musician and a true gentleman.
